Residence 3/Conflict 1

My area of conflict is the ArtsQuest building within the SteelStacks complex. Here, the decrepit SteelStacks and its surroundings conflict with the contemporary Arts Quest building, and the industrial contrasts with the white collar. There is also the historical conflict of the steel production plant shutting down many of its operations in the 80s and finally closing in 1995, leaving a negative economic impact in the area. From there, facilities for music, art, film, and more have replaced the dilapidated complex, tying into the fabric I have chosen. The ArtsQuest venue specifically is a 68,000 square foot hybrid building with a cinema, performance area, exhibition space, and more.

The structure was influenced by the industrial site, aiming to be less abstract and placing a lot of emphasis on the materials. The glass and concrete exterior allows the bright orange steel frame in the inside to be seen. Indoors, the glass facade provides a straight-on view of the steel stacks from both floors, which visibly connects the structures together. The building is raw and industrial, yet also elegant with the spiral steel staircase which provides beauty, but also stays true to the materials and mimics the cylindrical blast furnaces of the plant.
